Traveling Windmill
CHUÀN FĀN SHĒN (串翻身)
The windmill, or fan shen, is a group of moves unique to classical Chinese dance. Unlike turns, which are done on the horizontal plane, a fan shen is performed on the vertical one. The dancer keeps the torso tilted with arms stretched. When turning skillfully, it looks like a high-speed windmill. In the traveling windmill, performers execute many fan-shen consecutively while moving across the stage. This fan-shen is exceptionally beautiful when performed with water sleeves or billowing dresses.
