Discover the Heart of Shen Yun

Ancient Chinese legends tell that humans came from heaven, and that we all have a great yearning to return. This deep belief in the divine has permeated 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. But much of this heritage has been destroyed in China by the Communist Party.

Artists who practice Falun Gong founded Shen Yun, including some who escaped persecution in China.

That is why Shen Yun could only be established outside of China—in New York.

Why the CCP
Is After Us
The Chinese Communist Party’s
transnational repression campaign in the US

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) believes that China’s spiritual and cultural traditions are a threat to its rule. That is why the first thing it did when it took power was to try to wipe these traditions out, and why it continues to suppress them.

And that’s a big reason why Shen Yun cannot perform in China today.

The CCP’s goal is simple: total control even outside of its borders. It wants to dictate to you what you can and cannot see.

In addition, for decades, Falun Gong practitioners in China have faced brutal persecution. Millions have been detained, tortured, or worse, simply for meditating and living by the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance.

Shen Yun is giving voice to their stories, stories of men and women who simply wish to live a spiritual life, in the way that they choose, and to better their bodies and minds. Yet for this, they are losing everything.

For 25 years, human rights defenders worldwide have worked tirelessly to share these stories.

Spies. Threats. Slander. Sabotage.
Ever since Shen Yun was founded, the CCP has tried to stop us from performing, using an array of tactics:
Global Attacks Against Shen Yun
  • At first they tried pressuring theaters to cancel our performances; when that failed, they
  • Started slashing our tires and vandalizing our buses and trucks; when that didn’t stop us, they
  • Started paying for newspaper ads slandering us and flooding online reviews with fake comments
  • They sent secret agents who attempted to bribe the IRS to revoke our nonprofit status
  • They had people send prank bomb threats to our venues and death threats to our headquarters
  • They are now manipulating social media influencers and mainstream press to attack Shen Yun
Our Beliefs

For thousands of years Buddhist and Taoist practices thrived throughout China. The empire was known as “The Land of the Divine,” reflecting a belief that the ancient civilization was inspired by the heavens.

In the middle of the last century, most of this ancient heritage was destroyed when the Communist Party took power. Temples were razed to the ground, books and artwork burned, tens of millions massacred—and the traditional culture of an entire civilization was destroyed.

…But not entirely.

Falun Dafa was introduced publicly in 1992, and by 1999 it had as many as one hundred million practitioners. With more people practicing Falun Gong than members of the Communist Party in China, Party leaders began brutally persecuting practitioners. To this day, the Chinese Communist Party considers Falun Gong one of the most significant threats to its despotic rule. And yet, with exceptional fortitude, those who practice Falun Gong in China continue to peacefully resist this massive persecution.

A New Renaissance

Just as the spiritual world inspired the masters of the Renaissance, spirituality inspires us to create this art. And just like you don’t need to share in the faith of a Renaissance painter to appreciate his art, the same holds true with enjoying Shen Yun.

Shen Yun expresses beliefs from various faiths, heroes and stories found throughout Chinese history. These beliefs have a common thread throughout cultures, expressing courage, dignity, truth and compassion. No matter your beliefs, we can all benefit from the divine wisdom found throughout 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. Everyone on stage and in the audience is part of the revival of traditional Chinese culture. This culture is no longer limited to China.

Displaying the beauty of divinely inspired culture has propelled millions worldwide to find their own purpose in life. Shen Yun fills us with hope and inspires us to find our true selves.

Nurturing
Up-And-Coming Talent
Cultivating the next generation of artists at Fei Tian Academy and College

Classical Chinese dance is rooted in the ancient world, but its rigorous physicality makes it primarily a young person’s art form. To revive and spread this art, Fei Tian Academy of the Arts and Fei Tian College were born. These two schools are training the next generation of extraordinary dancers and musicians while providing them with top notch, bilingual academic education.

Both are religiously affiliated schools (with the Falun Dafa faith) and are fully approved by, respectively, the New York State Department of Education and the New England Commission of Higher Education—the same organization that accredits Harvard, Yale, and many other prestigious universities.

Fei Tian’s programs equip students to build strong foundations in the arts. And, like other dance companies, Shen Yun is proud to offer performance opportunities to students. On average, 85% of Shen Yun’s touring companies’ members are adult performers, with the remaining slots are open to talented young artists.

Practicum arrangements allow students to showcase and further develop their skills, similar to opportunities given to student-athletes in NCAA sports or the Olympics.

Fei Tian’s practicum courses are part of a curriculum approved by the New York State Department of Education and provide young dance students with:

  • Training and mentorship
  • Opportunities to travel internationally
  • A foundation for professional careers
  • Scholarships worth about $50,000 annually
Misconceptions Due to
Chinese Communist Party’s
Campaign Against Us
Is Shen Yun abusing children by having them perform for free?

On average, 85% of our touring members are adults. The remaining 15% are reserved for talented young dancers and musicians. They perform on a study-on-tour practicum with the Fei Tian schools, part of a program approved by the New York State Board of Education.

Young artists come to Fei Tian Academy of the Arts and Fei Tian College – schools that share a campus with Shen Yun -- because they want to train at an elite level. If they reach certain standards, they then have the opportunity to perform with Shen Yun, receive real life experience and elective class credit, and get to tour the world.

Dancers are typically young because of the athletic nature of classical Chinese dance. It’s similar to competitive sports, classical ballet, or Olympic gymnastics.

Are these performers being exploited by not getting paid?

The professional adults in Shen Yun—be they dancers, musicians, or production crew—are all salaried and also have their expenses paid, including hotels, transportation, and food for months on the road each year, which isn’t the case with many touring companies.

The student performers are on full scholarships, including room and board, amounting to around $50,000 a year. All of their expenses during the tour are paid, and they receive a stipend that helps cover their study-related expenses. Upon graduating, many of them apply to work at Shen Yun as fully salaried professionals, all without a single dollar of debt. Other Fei Tian College students go on to further education or decide to do something else, like starting their own dance studio. Some of the Fei Tian Academy students, likewise, choose to attend other colleges, like Columbia University, which has accepted several of our graduates.

Why does Shen Yun have such a large cash reserve?

Shen Yun’s annual revenue is comparable to other performing arts institutions, such as American Ballet Theatre (ABT) and much less than New York City Ballet.

With eight troupes touring the world simultaneously and a brand-new production every year, Shen Yun is a large-scale operation. Its expenses include salaries for dancers, musicians, technical crew, artistic teams, and administrative staff; training facilities and rehearsal theater; props, costumes, audio, video, and lighting gear; advertising and marketing; buses and trucks; food and medical services; hotels; and flights for hundreds of performers.

Moreover, our management wants to be ready for any eventuality in an uncertain world. During Covid, for example, while entire performing arts companies laid off their employees, Shen Yun was able to keep paying the artists’ and staff’s salaries even while not performing for a year and a half.

Are Shen Yun performers denied access to medical care?

Absolutely not. Our dancers receive medical treatment if injured, including surgery and physical therapy when necessary. In fact, a physician comes to our training center at least once a week.

Doctors who have regularly treated Shen Yun performers have come out publicly to say that such claims are both “ridiculous” and “insulting.”

Shen Yun dancers have also shared their experiences of how the company helped arrange necessary treatment and was very supportive throughout their recovery.

I’ve seen Shen Yun HQ described as a ‘compound’—why is it so secretive and high security?

That label is misleading. Our headquarters is located in Dragon Springs, which is a campus on about 400 wooded acres in the rolling hills of New York’s Hudson River Valley, featuring a lake, streams, and wildlife. The campus was built in compliance with local zoning and code requirements, and it receives many visitors each day, including parents dropping off or picking up their children from school, employees commuting to and from work, delivery trucks, construction workers, as well as state and county inspectors.

The Dragon Springs campus includes:

1. Majestic, traditional Buddhist-style wooden temples built in Tang Dynasty architecture.

2. Fei Tian Academy of the Arts and Fei Tian College. These are fully accredited, religious boarding schools offering academic education from high school all the way up to master’s degrees. Fei Tian Academy of the Arts is a registered K-12 school with a boarding provision for grades 6-12 that provides its students both a modern education in all of the academic subjects that will prepare them for college and also in traditional Chinese culture, beliefs and values. Fei Tian Academy students excel on the SAT with over 95% participation and scores that consistently exceed state and national averages. Likewise, Fei Tian College is an exceptional institution that has a focus on degrees in classical Chinese dance and prepares students for their lives ahead, whether they want to become professional Shen Yun dancers, start their own dance studios, or go into entirely different fields.

3. Shen Yun Performing Arts headquarters, where we train, rehearse, and house administrative staff and technical crew. This is where our choreographers, composers, and full artistic team produce their incredible work.

Unfortunately, we are constantly harassed because the faith that serves as the foundation of our community -- Falun Gong -- is preserving the traditional Chinese values and religious beliefs that the Chinese Communist Party has spent decades attempting to eradicate and is now attacking with renewed vigor. Because we receive almost daily death threats from the CCP and its operatives, Dragon Springs has to provide security to protect students and staff. Shen Yun receives multiple threats every month of bombings, mass shootings, and rape and murder of our female performers. There have been multiple incidents of vandalism and trespass by unknown individuals, including Chinese foreign nationals. Some students and staff have escaped from persecution in China and have family in China who are at risk. We must take all threats and attacks seriously, and they reinforce our conviction that the message of compassion, honesty, and forbearance taught by Falun Gong is as important today as it was when we started nearly two decades ago.

Are students isolated from society and not allowed to have smartphones, social media, or Internet access?

Fei Tan students have regular internet access through many public computers and often use them to complete schoolwork, correspond with family and friends, shop on Amazon, and so on. As is the policy in many schools around the country, however, computers may not be used to access inappropriate content.

Fei Tian students are given non-smart phones to call or text anyone they like. The schools indeed do not allow students to have smartphones or use social media accounts on campus. In this regard, they were some 15 years ahead of others, as many top school districts around the country are now adopting a similar policy.

The professional company members, including students who graduated, usually live off-campus with their families and commute to work. They have smartphones, cars, and contribute to the vibrant communities of their local towns.

Why does the CCP call Falun Gong and Shen Yun ‘evil cults’?

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) spreads disinformation about Falun Gong adherents wherever it can. When the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners started in 1999, the CCP began employing this kind of misleading labeling to justify its religious persecution and human rights violations.

In the 1990s, before the persecution began, top Chinese government officials praised Falun Gong for its health and well-being benefits. In 1999, because Falun Gong had grown so popular and independent, with more adherents than there were members of the Communist Party, CCP Secretary Jiang Zemin ordered Falun Gong eliminated. CCP propaganda campaigns targeted Falun Gong with misleading labels and other sensational disinformation to justify and deter international criticism of its brutal campaign.

In the interim, the movement has gained adherents across the globe, and not just in China. Those people are also targets of CCP propaganda, since silencing them is an essential part of the crusade to characterize Falun Gong as something other than what it is. Americans in all walks of life practice Falun Gong, peacefully in accordance with its principles.

Scholars, experts, and human rights organizations debunk these false ”cult” labels as merely political tools used by the CCP for no other reason than to justify its desire to wipe out Falun Gong and its practitioners around the world. The quality of Shen Yun performances, and their popularity among audiences everywhere, are evidence that truth can still prevail over the forces of repression. We are proud that our Shen Yun artists, and the staff that supports them, remain committed to artistic excellence, and are not deterred by these efforts.
